well an animator is going to be working with 3d models almost exclusively so if you are a very visual person this may be a good choice.

a programmer is going to be working with lines upon lines of code so if you are very technical and enjoy a challenge and are not very artistic or visual this may be a good choice.

what you forgot to note are graphic artists. these will make all of the logos used and also skin the 3d models. sometimes the graphic artists and animators do the same job as skills cross over.

technical support is going to be on chat/email/phone with customers so you need to be good with people and have a fair bit of pc knowledge although most just go by preset cue cards so arent of much assistance. this is generally not going to be a higher paid position.

production personell are the management team which means little skill besides managing are required however job stability is also very low since if something fails you can get canned. there are also the various support staff such as assistants but they do not receive much pay.

maya has many features and is a powerful program making it very useful to learn however it is also very complex and hard to learn which means it may be hard for a beginner to start out with and may proove too much to handle.

3dsmax is a simpler program to learn but is not as full featured.

ultimately you will likely need to be familiar with both of them.

My teacher kinda started me off on maya so i kinda have more experience in that then 3dsmax but all i did was create a bouncing ball witch is'n much but still something so I guess i'll watch a few videos and create a few things to have more experience on it.
