I have a 1TB toshiba EHD (which I have been using on windows for a few years, and recently changed my computer to a macbook pro) and I can only view files on the disk at the moment. I believe it isn't formatted correctly. If I reformat it, I assume I will lose all my data. Is there any way of reformatting the drive for use on Mac whereby I do not lose existing data on the drive? If not, what would be the best way to reformat it? I would appreciate it greatly if you could give step-by-step as I am new to mac OS, so I am not the most confident user. Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,

S

here is an article on using an external drive for a MAC: http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-set-up-an-external-ha...

I would suggest that you backup the data (copy the files you need from the external hard drive to your Macbook Pro's drive in a temporary folder), and after formatting, copy them back to the external hard drive.

I would suggest that the external drive is not your only place for saving data - you should always have a primary data drive and a backup drive - just in case one of the two drives die....you don't lose your data - and data recovery is very expensive....
