Hi

I recently upgraded my motherboard processor and power supply. I was running a x58 a ud3r gigabyte board with i7 930 along with a cooler master 850 watt psu. I had an issue and pretty much ended up having to replace the mb and processor but before I found out this issue, I replaced my psu thinking it was that.

Waste of money you may say, not at all, especially since my last psu was 6 years old and i got an evga supernova g2 which has 10 year warrenty,. I am happy with this.

Anyway i replaced my mb and prosessor for a republice of gamers z97 maximus ranger and an i7 4790. Works like a dream and not as buggy as the ud3r in my experience in the 2-3 months that I have had this.

Moving on now...

For the last 2.5 year I have been using a gtx 590 in my system, I have kept it all this time and to be honest I have always felt that upgrading would be a waste of money until recently. The main reason would have to be the vram issue, I play game and edit images in photoshop on a u2711 dell monitor.

Playing most games at 2560x1440 on ultra settings but games over the last year or so have been more demanding. My biggest issues is sin of a solar empire rebellion, great game and not even graphically demanding but horrible when viewing huge space battles. Company of heroes2 is another issue along with the recent rome and shugun total war games. Again moving on...

I have been looking a graphics cards over the last year and alway refused to pay the money for a gtx780ti. so i looked at the 780 and thought i could do that sli, again though a bit costly.
I even though an r9 290 is i was to budget. Crossfire or sli is what I am looking to go for due to the resolution, I just feel a single card wouldnt be enough.

looking on ebay I could go for a 690 for about £400 second hand which would obviously have no warrenty.

I could be a cheap ass and go for another 590 for about 150 which is a bargain considering I already have half the set up but I wouldnt really gain any advantage over vram with buying another, It sounds cool non the less.

With the release of the gtx 9xx series I have started looking at 780 for about £285 a card and have even seen the Ti on overclocker for 350. I also know these cards have been discontined.

I just dont know where to go on this. 980s will be awesome but way out of my price range especially since i would like two of them.

Any thoughts anyone?

Go with the GTX 970. Gives GTX 780 ti Performance for half the price.

Get a 970 for less than 300. Beats the 780 and is on par with the 780ti if not just ahead. It uses less watts and costs less

Would you consider an ATI card? You have a budget and a good psu to handle the relatively more power hungry ati cards.

Does the 970 honestly give as good performance as a 780 ti? I will say I have not had the esperience in seeing one run.

As far as ati goes, yeah I have considered an r9 290/ 290x. Although I have always been sceptical and its for the most silly of reasons, I always convince myself that its a gut feeling but its just me being silly. I'll explain to give a bit of hunour to this thread.

Basically I was given an old ati card from my brothers computer about ten years ago to put into what was a new 2.6 ghz celeron at the time and although it wasnt great, it was the better than the k6 mk2 or 3 that I had.

Anyway I tried this card in the celeron numerous times only to get the same result and it didnt even clicke that it wasnt working for a reason. I tried and tried and tried, i got sound but no visual. I thought if i kept trying it may work, only to realise a few years later that it was a compatibility issue with that particular system. For some reason it has alwys made me steer clear, as I said i look but can never seem to convince myself to buy one over nvidia.

In my experience I have not seem an ati perform. Hows photoshop on ati cards?

I use my HD 7870 GHz for Photoshop gpu acceleration with no problems, never had a single hiccup. Do you have any use for CUDA? anything 3D? As for gaming ATI cards do well these days, maybe wait until the 25th and see what AMD has planned (they may be finally releasing a 20nm GPU if TSMC got it working). What is the GPU budget?

I do not really have much use for cuda unless it benefits photography in photoshop at all. I do not really know anything about cuda though. From what I have been reading I dont. I am looking to learn flash in the near distant future and website design but that at the moment is it.
Budgeted around £600 could possibly stretch to £700. is there going to be another release of cards around the 25th?

Cuda is only used in a few applications like after effects and premier, Photoshop and web design don't need it. As a side, forget learning flash its not going to be around much longer learn html5 instead

yes but what is going to be released on the 25th is conjecture..nothing confirmed. I think we will see the R9 300 series debut.

i think an R9 295 X2 would fall into your budget, but would suffice more as a gaming card. For the Photoshop acceleration from GPU you could use a GTX 750ti and get the same results.

Photoshop doesn't care what gpu you have. Only about 6 filters are accelerated anyway

So what people are saying is go for Radeon? I mean obviously it is my decision, I am just looking for advice really. I Have been tempted by crossfire r9 290x, is it worth it? is the r9 295 any better? There is quite a lot to choose from to be honest.

You don't really need to crossfire, the gtx 970 is more than enough, with 4gb of VRAM, it can handle single and multidisplays with ease, at 1080p and is way cheaper and more power efficient than other gpus. The gpu barely gets utilised in photoshop so by all means I would go for the Nvidia GTX 970, the MSI Twin FrozR model is proven to be pretty much the best 970 model you can get

Thats fine at 1080p, how do you think it will handle 1440p on its own? I think thats a big concern to be honest. Its why I went for gtx 590 rather than the 580.
October 5, 2014 1:52:34 PM

The 970 can handle 1440p easy on its own, the VRAM can even handle multiple displays at 1440p, so don't worry about the selection, you will be fine with the GTX 970.
