ok i had my heart set on getting 2 290's for 4k gaming. but someone introduced the 900 series to me.
I'm not fussed about gaming in 4k i can save up for that later in time (when i have the right equipment and the prices drop down more :p)

Is the 980 really that much of a killer compared to the 290x? for that extra £100

I can afford any one of these card with a budget of £450 but what would you get?
1 gtx 980 and like get another one in around 5-6 months time.
or 1 r9 290x and another one is 3 months time.
or get 2 970's next month?

If anyone has a opinion on what would be good for me in therm of lasting long ect. i would love to hear it

Many thanks :)

Or get one 980 now, have great performance then SLI it a couple months from now and have performance that will make you think twice about upgrading to next gen.

If you have money for the gtx 980 then definitely go for it you can later add another gtx 980 if you want but i am just saying that 2x 970 is better than single gtx 980 but 2x 980 is obviously much much better.

The very interesting thing in the 900 series apart from its performance is the power consumption, saying that almost all of the industries now were fully focused in reducing power consumption, this reduced in power consumption while having a great performance is very impressive.

You can run 4k using R9 290X but the amount of power consumed will hit you in the long run, while having a 980 or 970 which will be more expensive but the advantages in the long run is significant. :)

The 970 = gtx 780 ti. The 980 is quite a bit more powerful.

The 900 series run cooler and are a lot more power efficient.

Unless you are getting a 290x for 150 on ebay they are not worth it any more.

AMD is announcing something on the 25th of september, possibly new gpus... 300 series? Might be worth waiting and seeing what it is.

Otherwise, the 970 is way better value then the 980 or 290x. Avoid EVGA 970s though. Somehow they mismeasured their cards and the heat sink is not centered on the gpu... don't know how that happened

I guess I'll have to wait till tomorrow see what AMD say about it.
Power consumption not too much of a big deal for me I just want pure speed :p Im liking the idea of this 980 the styles of the 970 are putting me off them sad to say that the looks of it are a decider for me :p

Get two R9 290's and crossfire them, best choice for value/performance. The R9 cards are far what i would consider outdated, but power consumption is noticeably different.

If it were me though, wait for the new R9 390/X cards to come out which will be 20nm.

r9 290 is about 400 $ and is weaker than the gtx 970 (330$) at high price high power consumption and heat.
So 2x r9 290 will require about 800 $ and 2x gtx 970 about 660$ plus the 2x 970 will outperform the 2xr9 290.
And the difference in TDP is almost double 145 watt compared to 275 watt.
