I live in a small town of about 30k people. When I play minecraft on any servers, sometimes all of the players on the screen freeze and i get a "Timed out" error. I have charter 30 mbps. When someone else in my family is watching youtube or netflix or anything like that my ping to the server gets REALLY bad and then I time out. Is this a router/modem problem or is it charter or what? Like all of the famous youtubers, how do I get good internet where they are not having problems with there internet at ALL! Like, they can stream, play on a server, AND have someone watching something in another room?! How does that work!? and how the heck can i get it?!
Also I will be doing some youtube stuff soon (when i get a good computer) and I will also be streaming.

What all of this nonsense comes down to is im sick of bad internet and I want better internet to the point where i can play minecraft and NEVER have it go down if some body else is watching something while I play.

Thanks so much doods!

1) They might well have issues sometimes, they just don't upload them to youtube.

2) What's your router? Unfortunately with charter you can't change your modem, but you can request JUST a modem and use your own router.

3) You are playing minecraft with your computer plugged into an ethernet cable, right? If you're on wifi, well, there's your problem.

Yeah. That's your issue. Get an ethernet cable and I'm betting your problems will melt away.

Well I got the Ethernet cable and it just go WORSE for minecraft.... Players are not even smooth on the screen, they are just jumping around EVERYWHERE and its impossible to do Pvp.. at this point my WiFi is better than wired, the cable I got is this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0083X8VZW

Is there something wrong with the cable? Did I do something wrong setting it up? Please help!

It seems to be a perfectly functional cable, and unless you managed to stuff it into a phone jack or something.. :p

Unfortunately, that probably means that you have a really really cruddy router. Do a couple of things for me:

1) Go to speedtest.net and figure out your internet speed.

2) See if you can figure out the make and model of your router / modem / combo box.

Okay... speed test:
(Speedtest.charter.com)

Last Result:
Download Speed: 62.68 Mbps (7.83 MB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 4.53 Mbps (0.57 MB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 16 ms
Jitter: 4 ms

Speed test

(Speedtest.net)
Ping: 13ms
Download speed: 65.67
Upload speed: 4.44 (OOOOOH BABY A TRIPPLE!)

Modem (The one charter sent me): Arris TM822
Router: Cisco linksys: EA6300

Anything else?

Okay, there don't seem to be any issues with your internet connection; that latency is a little high for my taste, but still absolutely within acceptable boundaries.

That modem is a pretty good one, but when I looked up your router, well... it has impressively poor reviews. That COULD be the problem, but I'm not about to tell you to go buy another router just in case. Do you happen to have an old router you could hook up to test with?

I do not have an old router I could hook up.... What is a good router for EVERYTHING? I will be doing a YouTube channel soon and I will be doing lots of Minecraft Pvp which requires good internet... I need good internet for that so that my family can be doing stuff while I record and play minecraft on servers. Now in one of CaptainSparklez videos he was saying he had 50 up 50 down, how the heck can I get a good up and down? What all of this comes down to is, what type of internet is good for a gamer who has family using it too? What router would be good for me? and what ISP can provide me with at least 30 up/down?

Thanks and I hope I was not too confusing!

Hello?

I was studying calc, mate. Remember that these are forums, not tech support, and those of us helping out are volunteering our own time for a good cause, when we're available. :)

Now then. Getting 50 up and 50 down is 1) only achieved through Fiber internet, and 2) Pointeless. Seriously, there's no reason to have that much upload bandwidth - your ~5 Mbps upload is already better than most. There's no need to switch ISPs or upgrade your internet package, seriously, you're freaking out about this.

Your internet is more than sufficient for your speeds. Remember that.

The issues you're having are coming from a problem somewhere that needs to get fixed. Solve the problem, and the symptoms go away.

As for routers, I would go with one of the following two options if you feel you absolutely must get a new router:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

However, I would absolutely first go into your router's settings and see if you can figure out what's causing these issues. Also, I don't know if minecraft needs to have ports forwarded, but that's also something you should check - a google search will tell you if it does or not, and if so, what ports.

Those are kinda overpriced routers cuz you don't need higher mb/s than your isp provides you.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
300mb/s and the basic 10/100 lan ports with short range wifi (home size, unless you live in a mansion) $20
Check out the reviews before you pick anything you buy online.

They are.

I suggested them because the OP already has a router with similar specs.
