Hey guys im looking into building a low cost HTPC and I want to run Ubuntu 14.04 and I was wondering if it will run fast enough on a HDD or would you guys recommend me getting a SSD my build consists of Intel Celeron G1850 2GB DDR3 ram Biostar H81MHV3 motherboard and an old 300 watt PSU I have lying around and the mb supports sata 6.0 gbs so should I get an SSD or just stick with a traditional HDD I want fast boot times and I know ubunutu is known for that but will a SSD really improve it that much or no

The only time you will notice a difference is when booting up. If you use sleep/wake its a non issue. I have Ubuntu 14.04 on a 32 gig ssd and Steam OS on an old 5400 rpm 2.5' hdd. Both play media and games fine, it just takes longer to boot and launch programs on the hdd. Go with the cheapest option unless you want to store lots media locally then the hdd is the better choice. I built a computer with an sshd and thought it was a good compromise.

If all you need is an OS to play and stream media go with the cheapest option.
