Is Apple upscaling 720p on the 6 plus?

So the GSMArena review of the iphone 6 came out today, and it has benchmarks comparing it to the 6 plus. Looking at the numbers, something odd occurred to me.
The 6 and 6 plus numbers nearly matched on both onscreen and offscreen 1080p rendering tests, despite the 6 plus having to push twice the pixels!
I think it is that Apple must be rendering at 720p and upscaling, so the 6 plus can match the 6 at benchmarks. Of course, this is pretty huge if it were true; it would completely negate the benefits of the 1080p screen for anything that uses 2d/3d rendering! Apple mentioned about using 'desktop class scaling' for the new phones, but I thought that would be just for things like heads up displays, not the renderings themselves. Can someone look into this further?
