Hi guys

After reading the sticky post and some threads, I am still unsure what to do. So here's my problem: I love modding Skyrim (the reason why I built my rig) and have reached a bottleneck right now with my single GTX760. I usually am scraping at 40 fps with regular drops to below 30 fps. After searching for solutions I have decided to go SLI instead of buying a new GPU (simply because it's cheaper and I already have one 760). As a side note, I have never had an SLI setup.

Here's my questions:
1. Would you guys recommend an SLI configuration for my setup?
2. Does it have a heavy impact to use one card with PCIe x16 and the other with x8? From what I understand it is possible to do this. My MoBo only has 1x16 and 1x8 slot (bought it for the optical out).
3. Will my PSU suffice?

Also, general input about my system is always welcome. It's my first self-built rig and I tried to get the most bang for the buck.

My system:

  • be quiet! Pure Power CM L8-730W
  • Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H
  • Gigabyte GTX760 OC, 4GB DDR5, PCI-E16x3
  • Intel i5-4670K (3.40GHz / 6MB)
  • Corsair Vengeance (2x, 4GB, DDR3-1600, DIMM 240)
  • Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo (120mm)
  • Crucial M500 (120GB, 2.5")
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 - 2TB - 64MB
  • LG GH24NS90
  • Fractal Define R4
  • One 1080p TV (I use my flatscreen in the livingroom as a monitor).

you have a good psu but while using sli
i am not sure cause gtx 760 alone requires a 500 w PSU
and i really dont like sli
instead of that i prefer upgrading the gpu alone
and gtx 760 requires pci x16 card so i guess there would be a performance impact

    Hey James

Thanks for your input! Why wouldn't you recommend SLI? So in your opinion should I rather get a GTX780 or something else?

Personally, if you want to, go for it, it will be easier, i suppose, but if you want the real bees knees, get the GTX 970 or the 980 if you have the money, which really, is what it comes down too... the funds, if you can, go for the 970 or the 980!

I would agree that selling the GTX 760 and getting a GTX 970 would make a lot more sense than SLI for Skyrim. It doesn't benefit much from multi-GPU setups.

SLI is required to get a playable fps at 4K at ultra
for 1080p sli is waste of money
if in your budget then I would strongly recommend going for the gtx 980 or 970
they are better and support dx12
so they're good for future games which will support it

A 970 would be a much better bet. 4gb frame buffer for skyrim mods and much more power.

Allright, thanks guys! I will try to sell my GTX760 or use it as a dedicated Physx Card (selling used hardware is pretty difficult where I live) and instead buy a GRX970 as soon as I have the money for it!
