Hello community,

So far i'm really excited about all the reviews of the new 980 en 970 cards. I've decided to sell my tri 680gtx 4gb cards and i've sold them for more than i've hoped for. My initial plan was to get two 970 cards as the performance and value advantage to the 980 is significant.

My question is the following: even though I could blow all the budget on two 980 cards i'm wondering if this is making economic sense (i'm upgrading every two years) and if i would buy 980's i have no clue what brand to get as besides some visual vulgarity on the gigabyte card to be honest, they are the same cards with a €60 difference between a gig and asus (the latter being the more expensive card). i'm not getting a whole lot wiser on the overclocking capabilities either.

Or would you guys advise more towards getting two 970 cards, maybe slap a different cooler on them and overclock it - and still save money on them. Possibly 3 970's cost the same as 2 980's but i've only had troubles once i added my third 680 to the mix and therefor have a strong dislike towards tri-sli.

I'm still using my trusty old dell 30" (got it 6 years ago) and if these damn things wouldn't be that expensive I would love to add 2 more to the mix. But that would require almost triple my current budget for the cards. Maybe sell the current monitor and buy a 4k? But that would favor more towards the 980's right?

To condense the story i'm stuck on the following heap of options:
-Get two 980's and call it a day
-Get two 970's and have some beer money left
-Wait for any possible soon to be released 980Ti's and maybe decide then?
-sell the monitor, get a 4k and then what cards?
-Sell the montor, get 3 1080p's and what cards?

My gaming is usually FPS with a preference towards multi-player (i'm a highly competitive person), and always finishing games such as far cry 3, watch-dogs on hardest difficulty SP and leaving it there. I am a bit of a graphics-nut for being able to turn everything to max.

Rest of my rig is:
-i7-3930k @ 4.3Ghz
-Rampage IV Extreme
-4x4GB G.skill ddr3 2133Mhz
-Samsung 830 256GB
-OCZ ZX series 1000W
-Coolermaster HAF X

I know it's a long read, but I appreciate any answers or advise on this subject.
Thanks so much!

2X 980s or wait for a possible 980 Ti.

What brand of 980 would you recommend and wouldn't the Ti be a chunck more expensive, in other words i would buy one and SLI later with a used one..

Almost certainly the Ti will cost more, that is if they even plan to release one. Dont forget it was the release of a more powerful AMD card that pushed Nvidias hand into releasing the origional Ti.

Any and all 980's should be fine, will you be OCing, if so that will narrow the choices down, but I believe they will all allow a moderate OC anyway.

I've read that the 980 can achieve a 20% overclock with fair ease, which sounds really good. Guessing i need a card with a bigger cooler than the reference (fe Strix?). I have one of my 4gb 680GTX's still left, would it make sense keeping this as a dedicated physx card or is that pure overkill with the 980 sli?

So far only MSI and EVGA have released non reference cooler versions for the 980s. I dont know which is better of the 2, I would wait for a full review of the new non reference 980s to come out.
