I think this Phenom is the best CPU for under 100 pounds. And still has one of the top performance/price ratios according CPU mark http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Phenom+II+X4+965.

Well do you want to think ahead, or do you want performance right now?

For under 100 pounds you can get a Phenom x4 965 Black, which probably has the best price/performance ratio out there. Or, if you're willing to go 20(american) dollars higher, you can get an i5 3470, that not only performs better, it'll also provide an upgrade pathway to Ivy/Sandy i5/i7, should you want that.

I've struggled to find a i5 anywhere near the price of the phenom overhear in the uk but thanks anyway :)

As soon as I posted this I did spot that it was cheaper almost everywhere else. GG me.

And I guess I'd like something that will give me a good amount of performance and last for around 3 years and support future upgrades easily

Also It'll probably need an appropriate micro/mini ATX 'board depending on where I decide to go with this build

Ahhh right. Allow me to re-illiterate.
It'll need to last 3 years max with the possibility of another 7870 coming to the party at some point. Also despite the phenom being a year older it is better in performance.

This is where it gets imbarrising. The motherboard is some dell hunk of junk. It and the processor are all that remain of my Inspiron (I bought it on the cheap from the outlet a while back) it was supposed to be a stop gap while I completed college/sixth form. However a lack of funds has limited me quite a bit...

Basically a Dell "Skywalker" motherboard.

well hello fellow british citizen, what i think you should do is get a new mobo and either a phenom II 965BE or An AMD FX 6300. they are both great, they are good at gaming and multitasking (FX 6300 moreso)

P.S: if you want to compare CPU's side to side use anandtech.com 's bench

Sadly they don't have an i3-550 for comparison >>. I was looking at the fx 6300 and It does seem to be what I am looking for however I hear very "mixed" reviews about it and whenever I ask anyone about it on any forums all that happens is a intel/amd argument. :(

I don't suggest AMD. This is coming from a long time AMD fan. their CPUs just don't stack up against Intel anymore. I would save up for an LGA 1155 board and get at least an i3.
