Advice needed for a new sub £100 CPU

Hello,

I've finally decided that my current gaming rig (i3-550,hd7870) is in need of a new processor and motherboard. Basically I need some advice on what processor to buy. And no, I do not want another i3

I was thinking along the lines of this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-Phenom-Cache-Quad-core-Proc...

any advice would be appreciated :)

Well do you want to think ahead, or do you want performance right now?

For under 100 pounds you can get a Phenom x4 965 Black, which probably has the best price/performance ratio out there. Or, if you're willing to go 20(american) dollars higher, you can get an i5 3470, that not only performs better, it'll also provide an upgrade pathway to Ivy/Sandy i5/i7, should you want that.

I've struggled to find a i5 anywhere near the price of the phenom overhear in the uk but thanks anyway :)

As soon as I posted this I did spot that it was cheaper almost everywhere else. GG me.

And I guess I'd like something that will give me a good amount of performance and last for around 3 years and support future upgrades easily

Also It'll probably need an appropriate micro/mini ATX 'board depending on where I decide to go with this build

so you're gonna replace a processor from 2010, with a processor from 2009? sounds like you are going backwards.
December 10, 2012 8:04:19 PM

well what else should I get then? Agreed it is older but age isn't everything...

well u mention you want good performance for 3 years with easy future upgrades, so it's not really making sense to me why you'd want to go backwards.

Ahhh right. Allow me to re-illiterate.
It'll need to last 3 years max with the possibility of another 7870 coming to the party at some point. Also despite the phenom being a year older it is better in performance.

Your better off grabbing one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Intel-Core-i5-750-2-66-GHz-Qu...

It's a Core i5 750, it's faster than the Phenom II once overclocked which it does pretty easily with a good heatsink.

Also it works with your existing mobo (it's an LGA 1156 CPU like your i3 550).

Trust me, the current motherboard is terrible. Otherwise I would :/

That's one old CPU.

Ha. You think that's old? The Phenom II is older.

That's what the original suggested CPU was.

This is where it gets imbarrising. The motherboard is some dell hunk of junk. It and the processor are all that remain of my Inspiron (I bought it on the cheap from the outlet a while back) it was supposed to be a stop gap while I completed college/sixth form. However a lack of funds has limited me quite a bit...

Basically a Dell "Skywalker" motherboard.

well hello fellow british citizen, what i think you should do is get a new mobo and either a phenom II 965BE or An AMD FX 6300. they are both great, they are good at gaming and multitasking (FX 6300 moreso)

P.S: if you want to compare CPU's side to side use anandtech.com 's bench

Sadly they don't have an i3-550 for comparison >>. I was looking at the fx 6300 and It does seem to be what I am looking for however I hear very "mixed" reviews about it and whenever I ask anyone about it on any forums all that happens is a intel/amd argument. :(

I don't suggest AMD. This is coming from a long time AMD fan. their CPUs just don't stack up against Intel anymore. I would save up for an LGA 1155 board and get at least an i3.

^^ WINNER!

Well here's hoping AMD can get back into the game soon. I'd rather not have to spend stupid amounts on decent performance. Oh well such is life I guess. :(

intel doesnt charge stupid amounts. in fact i can't remember a time where high end cpu's were as cheap as they are now.

notice there really arent any amd chips there at all.

There happens to be a AMD section.

I think I'll wait for steamroller and Haswell to come out. It'll give me time to get more cash together so I can buy something more powerful/decent rather than buying another i3. While I appreciate the advice the main reason I was upgrading the processor was due to ARMA3 (Now delayed thanks to the issues in Greece)and GTA 5 (No confirmed PC port) as both would've been more processor intensive and my current set up (processor wise) is really not up for it.

That would definitely be the best option because Intel's tock (Haswell) is coming soon....
