Bought a jvc deck with 200w total power and installed 4 jvc 230w 6.5 inch speakers in the doors of a 2002 rav 4. Speakers sound like crap after I turn the volume up to about 17 and the deck goes to 50. Sounds like a lot of distortion and sometimes it sounds like some speakers have a lot more bass than others. Not sure of the problem. Please help

The first question I would ask is what is the RMS of your head unit and speakers? How close are they to paired up? I noticed you listed total wattage for the HU, so I am assuming the same for the speakers. As far as the bass, how are the speakers installed and do you hear more bass in the back than the front or vice versa? Just a quick guess, but it sounds like the extra bass might be the result of different resonances in the speaker locations.

The speakers are 40rms and the deck I believe is 22x4 rms. the speakers I mounted right onto the factory holders the old speakers were on. I had double checked wiring to make sure I had the negative and positive wires orientation correct. I played around with base levels and things on the stereo. I figure I might need an amp to power the speakers.

You will get a cleaner sound running an amp and it's not a difficult install, so I would put one in.
