Hi guys

I have a dalema here.

I have been running with a e8400 core 2 duo and I have recently picked up a core 2 quad. q9500.

and I was wondering if i would see any performance gains if i were to put the q9500 in.

even thought the Q9500 has more cores its clocked in at 2.8GHz whereas the E8400 is clocked at 3.0Ghz?

Also will the standatd heatsink be able to keep the Q9500 cool, as it as a higher tdp than the E8400.

thanks in advance for your answers.

P.s. I intend on going on overkill with a new, like the artcic freezer 13 heat sink any way was just wondering if it was necesary to change the heatsink.

If your MB BIOS recognizes the Q9550, it will be better in games and other apps that are multi threaded. http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/711/Intel_Core_2_Duo_E...

The two processors were both released about the same time. So if your MB is using the E8400 now, it should also recognize the Q9550. What board do you have?

I am not really sure what motherboard it is. It is from a pre-built hp dx2400 series. Its a system G33 family chipset and Super I/O: Asus F8000, not sure if this means anything.

I have put the Q9500 into the mobo and it worked fine. My bios says that it was last updated in 2008, but it seems to be working fine with the quad core.

Under some light gaming and just after start up the core reaches temperatures up to 65 degrees Celsius and it idles at around 40 degrees celsius. Could this be due to the bios or the stock cooling system?

thanks again for your time and patience.

Yes, it sounds like the cooler may be too small. Did it come with the 95W Q9550 or are you using the one that came with the 65W E8400?

I was using the heat sink that came with the 65W E8400.

You just answered your own question. The E8400 cooler can't keep up with the heat from the Q9500. The Q9500 came with a beefier cooler that had a copper slug in the base for better heat transfer. If you go with an aftermarket cooer, you'll have no heat issues.
Or you could simply pick up the proper cooler for the Q95xx processors. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-INTEL-CORE-2-QUAD-HEATSINK-...

Thank you for confirming my suspicions. thank you very much clutchc. Your assistance is much appreciated. I am going to go for an after market heat sink that look so much cooler. thanks again.
