To get the most out of RAM you need to run it in dual channel mode with two of the exact same sticks. E.G You buy an 8GB kit of RAM, it has two 4GB sticks of RAM. You install them in a dual channel configuration. Do not use an 8 and 2 and from different manufacturers just no

Sorry, it's morning now and I can give you a more clear answer.

There are three broad categories of RAM differences. - Size, timings and manufacturer. If the differences are apparent, it inhibits the functioning of the RAM sticks as a pair - sometimes more, sometimes less. FOr instance, if the sizes are different, then depending on your motherboard, some or all of the RAM may not operate in dual- or quad-channel mode.

If the timings are off, then sometimes, the RAM may operate at the lowest timings that are compatible across the memory sticks.

Finally, the worst-case incompatibility, would prevent the machine from completing successful POST. This should not be permanent, and provided you didn't damage anything or dislodge anything while inserting or removing the new RAM, removal should return you to the original state and the ability to boot successfully as you did before inserting hte RAM.
