My Specs:

Intel 4670k
ASUS Z87
16gb DDR 3 1600
XFX 7950 3DDR
120 GB SSD
1TB HD
WIN 7 64 BIT
SAMSUNG 27 INCH LCD 1920X1080

I only play FPS with the gfx settings cranked up. So I am wondering if my current gpu will be able to handle the monitor I have linked below.

144hz would mean you can get up to 144fps to display correctly.

I don't think a 7950 can push that many FPS. Maybe one low/medium, and of course depending on the game.

Also- how many FPS are you getting right now in games with VSYNC disabled?

Thanks for your help. No lie, I play all of my FPS with everything set to as high as they can. Alien Isolation, Payday 2, Skyrim, Asseto, BF3, Assetto Corsa, Deus Ex HR and Far Cry 3 are the recent games I play maxed out WITH no stuttering or any crap. I will check out how many fps I am getting in these games...but I am sure it is 60. If not a new card wont hurt.

Remove VSYNC and run FRAPS. Post back the results of a few games.

Yea I will tonight. I don't think I have ever enabled vsync.

I've never used FRAPS. Do I just run it during some gfx intense gameplay and get the average?

I've always used Benchmarks within the game, as well as 3d mark stuff.

Most games enable vsync by default. So go into the settings to disable it (for testing).

Just download FRAPS and start it before you start your game. There will be a counter on one of the corners of your screen displaying the current FPS.

You can use it in games and benchmark.

The idea is to see if you're getting high enough FPS with all details maxed out. Most likely you're not going to be able to get higher than 70fps if you have antialiasing on.

Yea I always disable vsync...and antialiasing is usually at 8 or 16. Even if I get mediocre results with my 7950, I think a Nvidia 970 will be the next upgrade.

I love having my 27 inch monitor...but it seems like such a waste to just upgrade it to the same thing just with LED and a IPS PANEL at 60hz.

I think you mean AF = 16. I haven't seen any AA @ x16.

AA is much more demanding than AF.

The 970 is awesome. If you're already getting 60+ FPS on a 60hz monitor, you can't do any better with a new card at the same settings.

To get more FPS, you need a monitor higher than 60hz.

If you can get 100FPS with that 7950, go for the monitor.

If you get 45 right now with the settings you have, go for the 970.

I ran FRAPS on SKYRIM and the average was 59.4.

Really interested how it would perform with a 144hz monitor at '27.
