So I currently have an old EVGA GeForce GTX 550 ti.

Where I work, they're giving me a PNY Nvidia Quadro K4000, which is a workstation graphics card.

Which will perform better for gaming?

Obviously the Quadro wouldn't be worth it if I had to pay for it, but since it's free...

Thanks!

The workstation card is not designed for gaming. There are no drivers for it and the games you would play. I'm not sure any game would recognize it. But since you are getting a $800 card for free, try it out and report back. Then sell it on ebay or someplace and use the money to buy a GTX 970.

I wonder what it would do on a graphically demanding game, one that wasn't capped at 30 fps? Either way, that looked pretty good.

I would ask the guy who posted the video (I speak Russian if needs be) but I don't ever comment on Youtube haha. I'm also at work so I am hesitant logging in with my personal account (despite logging in with Tom's).

But you are probably right about support - maybe not all games would recognize the card.

Thanks for the replies! And I was pretty much planning on selling for a real gaming card as suggested. I ran some benchmarks with the 550, so will try the new card tomorrow probably.

Why not take the card, install it, and see what the differences are? I had a laptop with quadro graphics and I never had trouble with games crashing or not recognizing the card. The drivers are not really designed for games, but that does not mean games wont run. Good luck

The GTX 550 would probably be a lot better than the Quadro 4000 as the Quadro 4000 is definitely a workplace card.

Correct it is very much a workstation card, but couldn't a high-end workstation card potentially out perform a low-end gaming card? I know they're made differently and for different things.. but the end goal is still somewhat the same I guess... hmmm.

Well so far all I've had time to try is the Bioshock Infinite benchmark tool ha. I know that isn't super professional or anything, but whatever.

The K4000 had an 80% fps boost over the GTX 550 ti.
K4000 overall average fps: 36
GTX 550 overall average fps: 20

I'll try run some more soon and see.

There you go. Live and learn. Pro gfx cards are one area I never ventured into. So this was a learning experience for me too. (not that I'll ever have a reason to spend that kind of money for one, though)

Now, you'll have to decide what is more practical; using a $700 pro gfx card for good gaming graphics, or selling it and using the money to buy a card for great gaming graphics.
