The heaviest load is of course gaming @ 1080p resolution.
My thinking regarding the i7 is in case they really do start coding for multiple cores. With a big 230mm fan blowing over the Hyper 212 & GPU temps and acoustics should be fine. The Prodigy is mainly because I really hate hanging a cooler and big GPU card of a MB vertically, it makes me rather nervous.
The total price is my limit and I'm just looking for any feedback in case I've missed something obvious.

I did make up one with a 'K' series i5 which includes a better MB and Noctua cooler which actually comes out a bit dearer http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/hvGxVn @£888 (although the Hyper 212 may be suitable).
But some of the recommended hardware specs coming out now made me rethink, 4 cores@4.2GHz or 8 cores@3.6GHz?

I have an older 2500k and use the 212 cooler. I run it at 4ghz for everyday use and it stays at 40c or below. If I want to game, I have a second setting in bios for 4.4 and even then it rarely goes past 70c. Personally, I think the gpu is the most critical for gaming and the 290 you picked should give all you need.

Use the Asrock m/b with the I5 and save a few $$.

Either way, that's a great gamer.
