Will upgrading my Graphics card be a waste if I don't also upgrade my monitor?

I am looking into buying an MSI GTX 970, and I am a bit concerned that I am just wasting money if I don't have a great montior to go with it. My current monitor isn't bad though; it is a 24" AOC 1920 x 1080 with a 60 hertz refresh rate. So my question is, is my monitor just bottle-necking this cards capability, or is upgrading still a solid choice?

it'll do bf4 mp ultra 1080p at 70-80fps. So no, it's not going to be vastly overpowered for your screen. The next gen of games will be worse.
