hey guys,

building an editing rig. I'll go with the MSI X99S SLI Plus mobo which has 8 RAM slots & a 2x8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport RAM 2400, cl16 kit . First of I've been told to buy a 4x4GB kit because if I'd buy one or two 2x8GB kits it wouldn't work. Also only 2 sticks wouldn't work in a 8 slot mobo. ATM I only can afford 16GB of RAM but I'd like to upgrade in the future. Can I go with 2x8GB ram sticks just finewithout having problems running it ATM & no problems when I upgrade?
Thanks.

Get 4X4GB, the motherboard supports quad-channel memory. And these 4 sticks, you don't put them in 1 side. You put 2 in 1 side, and 2 in the other one. When you get the motherboard, its manual will explain this.

can I then easily upgrade with another 4x4GB kit to a total of 32GB?

Yep. But it's not worth it, it would be a waste of money.

it's not for me. 32gb would give me so much benifit that it would take less than a month to get that money back. Currently I'm on 1x8GB with a gtx660 lol. Was just wondering if it's even possible to run a 2x8GB kit on a 8 slot mobo.

Yes. It's very possible. The memory would run on dual-channel mode.

Alright thanks. I've been told stupid things then. And I can go one buying 2x8GB until I sometime have 64GB and it'd be just fine right? Just going for sure.

I'd stick with 16GB (and yes as mentioned, 2x8GB will work fine), but if thinking 64GB down the road, would wait till you can just get a 64GB set, mixing DRAM can be and often is problematic, and would be even more so adding 16GB at a time

by mixing do you also mean that if I would get 4 of 2x8GB kits of the exact same RAM sticks it'd still be problematic?

I'd say a real strong possibility, if you were in the factory and pulled 10 sticks right off the assembly line as they finished, you might find 4 of them that will all play nice together, might not even find 4 that will, that one reason the prices are higher for 4 stick sets, it takes more testing to find sticks that will play nice fo a 4 or 8 stick set

that's a shame. Anyway, thanks for taking Your time.
