Nintendo has unfortunately positioned the Wii U as a secondary console for this generation due to marketing and hardware. If you're looking to play third party games like Destiny, Halo, Metal Gear, CoD, ect, then you're going to have to play them on ps4/xbone since these developers aren't releasing their games on the Wii U. These third party games are really what is selling consoles now because people want an easy way to play online with their friends. Nintendo has some killer first party games coming out, but their online experience is truly horrendous considering what year it is.
My prediction is that Nintendo's lineup leading into 2015 will sell a lot of consoles, but until Nintendo actually does some marketing that explains what the Wii U actually is (a console, not an accessory), they're going to have a hard time reaching the general public.
As for my experience with the Wii U, I've only had one for a week now, but I can honestly say it was worth the money even if you only play Mario Kart 8 with a few friends and family. No other console offers the local co-op experience that Nintendo has currently and is going to be coming even stronger here in the next few months.
Great points you make thier. I already have preordered Super Smash Bros 4 for Wii U on November 11, can't wait for that game. That, along with Mario Kart, is going to be another killer game that sells another 500k consoles perhaps. I know Mario Kart alone sold an additional 1.2 million Wii U consoles, so you can see how much of a financial help that had on the company. Fortunately for Nintendo, they have a very strong mobile-game market considering how well the 3DS does and the great-quality games that come out for it.
But you are right about coop experience. On the Gamecube I used to play Mario Party 4 with my friends, and we always had such a blast. IWe did it a few times a year, but I'll never forget how much fun we had. Games for the other consoles (PS4 and Xbox One) are typically only good for single player. Multiplayer usually gets boring quickly. So although Nintendo's revenue is not like that of the GCN or Wii era, they are still receiving a good amount of incoming and feeding people with great first-party titlles.
