Hi everyone, I have a strange question for many years...
Why there is a HDD LED on the computer, but there isn't a CPU LED(Just blink when CPU is busy)?
And, why we can monitor CPU usage in the task manager, but we cannot monitor disk usage until Windows Vista(I mean the "highest active time" in the resource monitor, very similar to CPU usage, not how many disk space used)?
By the way, can I make the "highest active time" shows on the desktop, just like "CPU meter" gadget?
Thank you for every reply!

Consider the power light to be your CPU led. If its on then its doing something, even if its waiting for more work.

+1^
The CPU is ALWAYS working. Even when "idle".

Thank you for replying.
But I'm not really understand your opinion, if it's always working, why there are "CPU usage"? And the power @ different usage is also different, plus, modern CPUs can adjust core voltage even frequency automatically, based on usage, so why it's always working?

What updates the clock? How does the OS know you plugged something into the USB port? What monitors the keybd and mouse to see if you moved or pressed a key? Even asleep there is a tiny bit still watching for you to wake the system up or monitoring the NIC for the wake up packet if wake on lan is enabled.

We have CPU usage apps to see how much cpu is being used and how many cores are. When not being used to its fullest, the OS & cpu will reduce clock frequency, lower voltages, and shut down unused cores to save power and/or reduce temps.
And Then theres turbo-boost. When the CPU isnt being stressed badly, but is being used, the CPU will overclock itself to run faster. It again monitors the load and temps, ready to drop out of turbo when needed.
