Windows 7 old installation reversion

My CPU recently died, so I purchased a new motherboard and CPU. I know that, ideally, a repair of the operating system using the drivers for the new hardware can be done, but I tried that and failed. So I ended up overwriting my current Windows 7 installation with a fresh one to generate a new hardware profile (or somesuch; I can't pretend to know how it works). I'm sure you're all familiar with the deal; current installation is a nightmare for a user (like me) that's gotten set in their ways, and the solution to all this seems just out of reach in that Windows.old folder.

So this is my goal:
To A) Transfer the current hardware profile (or drivers or whatever makes it tick) to Windows.old and start using the old installation again
Or B) Transfer my EVERYTHING from Windows.old into the current installation

Honestly, this is largely motivated by sloth. Don't want to patch for days, don't want to spend a month tweaking the OS to my own peculiar tastes, don't want to have to remember and hunt down all those tweaks I did.

I feel like I'm getting long-winded, but I'm almost done. As I understand it, the problem is that I want to change OS files while the OS is using them. That being said, I'm willing to use another operating system as a kind of intermediary; I would have tried Ubuntu, but my in my (admittedly limited) experience, it doesn't play well with NTFS.

Any information at all would be greatly appreciated.
