Hello!

So i'm very eager to upgrade my graphics card and need others help to make sure i buy the right one since i'm not an expert and have made bad component decisions before.

i'll start with giving you my current build:

Motherboard: Asus Gryphon Z87
Power Supply: Chieftec A-135, 400-650W
CPU: Intel i7 4770k
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U9B
GPU: MSI Geforce GTX 660 Gaming Edition
Memory : Team Elite DDR3 2gb(x4) 1333mhz
SSD: Samsung 840 PRO 128gb (boot drive)
HDD: ATA ST31000528AS SCSI 1TB
Case: Fractal Design R4

So my current gtx 660 is running battlefield 4 on ultra with 40 normal fps and can drop to 30 sometimes, that's the reason i want to upgrade. I'v been reading a lot about GTX 970 and it's seems really good for the money, 380€ where i live.

Now is 970 the card i should upgrade to and am i upgrading at the right time, i know 8 series will be released soon but there is no info of their prices and specs yet.

While at it, should i also upgrade my memory at the same time to 2x 8gb 1600mhz.

Thanks in advance and i hope this post made sense :)

The GTX 970 is a solid choice, but you should definitely update that PSU ASAP before buying. You want to have something from EVGA, Seasonic, XFX, and so on.

what do you mean by 8 series ?

gtx 970 is a very good upgrade from what you have you can expect getting double the FPS what you currently get even more than that.

Low end PSUs will not be able to handle the output loads required high end GPUs. It's not the wattage, it's the quality of the capacitors. You get a PSU with low end workmanship and poor quality capacitors, it can short out on you or worse. You definitely want a quality supply with any sort of GPU upgrade.

8 series is laptop / ultra book only, just like the Radeon 8XXX series. You won't be seeing these GPUs on desktops.

If a PSU gets burnt or shorted it can take the motherboard and sometimes the card with it i have lost my previous board like that .
At loads it can give up easily it could get easily shorted with power fluctuation and the most important thing the PSU which generally is without 80+ certification have lower amps which is most important for the card than wattage.

Yup, I've seen PSUs blow up, short out, and do other crazy things. I had an Ultra PSU (BTW, never buy anything Ultra makes   ), and the thing kept shorting out my system when I tried to do anything on it that required use of the CPU not in idle mode.

Thank you everyone for the help, i once again got a bit smarter in the PC world :) . i ordered MSI gtx 970 and Corsair CX750, i know CX750 is not high end, but i called a retailer and googled that CX750 is good enough and doesn't need a 200$ psu.
