It is refurbished "like new" and comes with an Intel i7 4700MQ processor, 8 gigs of RAM, and 750 GB 5400 RPM hard drive.

I was wondering which party of the laptop I should upgrade first: the RAM (to 12 or 16 gigs) or the 750 gb HDD to an SSD?

Which will improve performance more?

Obviously first upgrade the RAM. It will make it much faster.

You will really only see better performance when upgrading RAM if are running programs that requires large amounts of RAM. Examples includes very large databases or working on very large digital art files. For average usage and games 8GB is more than enough.

A SSD will make your laptop more responsive because it loads and saves programs / files much faster than a standard hard drive.

Your RAM is quite enough for above average use. Upgrading to SSD will do the magic.
