I need to put a new HD in my computer and while I would liike to upgrade to 7 i don't want to put much money into this computer but my question is, now that XP is not supported is it still possible to install windows from an oem key? I have the sticker on my computer with the key.

hhmm well windows 7 is also not being sold by microsoft.(some 2rd party do still sell them) so unless you want windows 8. the upgrade path is limited. just buy a win 7 home premium..much better.

question is are you sure your not gonna use it in the coming years? when win 10 comes out are you gonna change os right away?? even though at that start there;s limited software for it?

I find myself in a similar situation.

I have an old laptop that runs XP. I have a desktop that runs W7 but I still use my old laptop on a regular basis.

I don't want to spend money on that old PC but it has become so slow and I would like to reinstall XP. I have both the OEM CD and the 'real' MS CD.

Questions:

1. which CD do I use? The OEM CD or the MS CD?

2. After installation will it update XP up to the latest SP? I mean: will it be possible to get updates up until support was ended or will it not update itself at all?

Thanks!

I did some more searching and I think I have found the answer myself:

This is what I found on http://www.zdnet.com/7000025151/ :

Windows XP can still be installed and activated after end of support on April 8. Computers running Windows XP will still work, they just won’t receive any new security updates. Support of Windows XP ends on April 8, 2014, regardless of when you install the OS.

And this is what I read on http://superuser.com/questions/759926/ :

I did this by downloading patches directly from microsoft (as an .exe (executable) download) instead of going through windowsupdate
