Will my motherboard support a CPU upgrade?

Can I upgrade just my CPU?

Hi all, I am working on doing some small upgrades for a dell dimension 5150 which has the dell wg261 mobo. I was wanting to upgrade my CPU to something like an intel core 2 duo E7600, or a core 2 duo E8400. Before I bought anything I wanted to make sure that I wasn't buying something that wouldn't work in my computer. The socket in the mobo and the cpu is an LGA775 but on this website, It says that the maximum supported CPU is an Intel Pentium D or an Intel Pentium 4. I was wondering what other factors affect upgrades and whether or not the website is wrong, and I can in fact upgrade my CPU.

No the mobo is very old and cheap it won't support any Core 2 series CPUs.my recomendation would be to get a new LGA775 board like an asus P5K-vm,those are very cheap these days and will support pretty much any CPU (with only a few extreme series CPU exeptions)

Hmm, if you are going to upgrade at all why not come up to the newest socket?

For just over $100 you have a nice newer motherboard and a good processor! If you want to invest in the i3 you would be leaps above anything on the 775 socket.

"new LGA775"? Socket 775 was obsolete years ago. Board and cpu's went out of production in what, 2010?

The CPUs listed there are the only ones that you can use. A i3 4130 with a h81 motherboard and a 4GB stick of RAM is less than $200, there are cheaper Pentium CPUs, that are around $50 Bucks cheaper than the i3 option, it really comes down to what do you plan to do and how much are you willing to spend.
