What's the best graphics card for gaming @1080p?

SLI: If it fits my budget

Where: USA, preferably online.

System specs: Building a new machine, so no restrictions.

Display: I work (coding) using 2 x 22" @ 1080p, but I unplug one of them when I'm gaming. If your suggestion supports 3 monitors, should I go for it? Is it worth gaming with 3 monitors?

the answer would be the fastest one you can afford, up to about $300. otherwise you're looking at semi-overkill for 1080p. the gpu should be around 1/3 of your total budget for a balanced gaming build.

I just noticed that you have a "3x 24" Nvidia Surround" on your footer. What are you thoughts regarding triple-monitor gaming? Is it really a pain to find/configure games like people say?

I don't have specs because I'm building a gaming desktop from the ground up. Just imagine that you have $800 saved for the graphics card and are going to game @ 1080p. What card(s) setup would you suggest?

If you want to max out or nearly max out you games at 1080P... the recent intro of GTX 970 & 980 have cause price to fall on a number of other cards:
NVidia 770, 780, 780Ti now all discontinued and selling for about 1/2 what they did less then 1 year ago
AMD 280, 280X, 290, and 290X while not officially discontinued, their prices were also slashed

Quad core CPU, 650watt power supply....

Oh, mis-read, you have $800 JUST for the GPU.... ah, you don't need to spend that much to game at 1080P. Any of the cards I mention will do the job for less than half your $800. But, if you do have $800, get the latest, greatest GTX 980 at less than $600 it'll be rock solid for 1080P ....

Well, I do know that 1440p and 4k are becoming high-end standards but I don't have much of a choice. I live in Brazil and over here the price of monitors and graphic cards are inflated as hell. I'm talking about US$1.2k for 1440p monitor and US$800 for a US$300 card. So, having to choose between maxing out my graphics @1080p or having a weak graphics card @1440p/4k, I chose the first (Also, a card is easier to transport). I recognize that $800 is a bit of overkill but I wanted to gather as much information/options before deciding

Not if you are used to gaming on a 27" screen and don't have a grand or more to get the same size 1440p or 4K.
