Solution
Before Using G-sync monitor, make sure your computer requires an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650Ti BOOST GPU or higher.

In my opinion, ASUS ROG PG278Q is great, both the physical appearance and the support of 2560 x 1440. Tthe price is $799, which is a little bit expensive.

BenQ XL2420G only charges $599, though 1920 x 1080 that really not matters a lot since 24" with 1080p is enough. If it is 27" than 1440p is more required.

Both of these 2 monitors are 1ms (gtg), 144Hz

Budget? Prefer Size? G-sync necessary?

For no G-sync, BenQ XL series (XL2411Z,XL2420Z,XL2420T,XL2720Z) might be good choice for you since the color accuracy is actually good.
For G-sync, ASUS ROG PG278Q or BenQ XL2420G are both for you to consider.

Above all are all 144Hz and 1ms gtg, at least 1080p.

Are the G-sync monitors really worth the price and if I were to buy them which one out of the two you listed would be the best.

Consider Cost/Performance ratio, I'd like XL2420G more.

Back to talk about G-sync or not, I really think the price is still too high. You can search other monitor manufacturers with g-sync monitor, all are above $599.
I believe the price might drop since AMD free-sync technology will come into the market at the end of 2014.

I would check out the benq xl2411z. I bought that monitor a few months ago and its fantastic. If you have the power to push 90fps+ there really is no need for gsync in my opinion. Yes you will get the occasional stutter when the frame drops, but with a strong enough gpu it stays smooth most of the time. Is it worth 2x the price for getting rid of the occasional stutter? If it is then go ahead and get gysnc, otherwise just stick to a normal 144hz tn monitor.

The asus is also good. Here are both monitors.
