Is there a noticeable difference between 1080p and 1440p?

I am considering making the transition from 1080p to 1440p but will I even see a difference apart from smaller text and a hotter GPU?

Bare in mind about 2 years ago I was downloading DVDRips of films and then I tried a Blu-Ray of a Friends season, couldn't see any difference at all in the video but then my eyes got used to it and now DVD looks shit to me

The 1440p resolution will look a lot nicer. The more pixels make dark colors dark and light colors really pop. Now that I have gone to 1440p, I will probably never go back to 1080p myself.
