How much of a performance increase (if any) will I see if I build this desktop?

Currently I am using a decent laptop:
cpu: i7 3635QM 2.4ghz
GPU: radeon hd 8870m
RAM: 8gbddr3
laptop model is a series 7 chronos NP77oz7e-S01UB
the build I have planned is
MOBO: MSI Z97 Motherboard Model#: Z97S SLI PLUS
CPU: Intel Core i5- 4670k
GPU: evga geforce gtx 660
RAM 8gb ddr3

This would be the first time I've built a tower so I'm not to sure I've done it correctly. could anyone also tell me what psu I'd need for the build.

Yeah if you want to game, get the 4690k (it OCs better) and get a better graphics card, since that one is a couple generations behind now. I would suggest either the Radeon 280x, the GTX 760 (or 960 when it comes out in Q1 2015) or the 970 if you want more performance for more money.

For the PSU, you should get at least 600 watts for one graphics card, but it you want 2 later, get at least 750 watts. I would get a psu from reputable brands such as Corsair, EVGA, or Fractal Design.

Thank you for the suggestions. I added the 760 and the 4690k and Im still under 800 (I have an old harddrive and windows 7 on it so I saved a little bit of cash.

If it's gaming, I'd just go with an I5 4460/4440 (cheaper one) and get a stronger graphics card.. (R9 290/R9 280/Gtx 770) The performance difference between the 4690k and 4440 are minimal.

TF2's easy to run. (If I can play it with Intel Hd 3000..... it's fine) You'll see a significant performance increase in other games if you decide to go with a 4460 and 290 though.

FYI - You can't take a HDD out of an old machine and expect the OS install to work on a new system. You will need to do a fresh OS install on the new system.

Also if you get a cheaper cpu you should get a non-overclockable motherboard chipset like h87, but keep in mind that h87 does not support crossfire/SLI. With a cheaper mobo, you could spend more on a better graphics card.
