computer monitor bootup takes forever

when I go to turn my computer on it starts up great, but once I turn my monitor on it stays black for quite some time. eventually itll start to show my desktop but only until I move my mouse and then it goes black again. After a while my screen finally appears and it works like a charm. - it also has some visual tearing of the left side (looks like little pixels along the side of my screen) until it is completely working then they go away. My question would be, is my computer screen just about dead (as it is a lg flatscreen that is quite old) or is there a simple solution to this problem!
