Thread response question

I went into a thread (NEW to me) read the original question and all the other responses. Came to an answer that I wanted to try but had a question about it and clicked respond to: XYZ and it took me to a page where the original question was on top and it asked for me to ANSWER in the box where XYZ's answer was. Just trying to learn, did I do something wrong? Thank you for your kind consideration
