Custom Built PC Won't Connect to Monitor

My problem is that when I connect my pc to my monitor, my monitor says entering power saver mode and I can't do anything.

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 860K 3.7GHz Quad-Core Processor

Motherboard: ASRock FM2A55M-VG3+ Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard

Memory: Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory

Storage: Seagate Barracuda ES 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Video Card: Radeon XFX R7 240 2GB DDR3

Case: BitFenix Merc Beta (Black)

Power Supply: EVGA 600w

Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24F1ST

Can it be that I'm using an old monitor from a really old computer?

Did you install the drivers for your R7? Have you tried plugging it into the on board video?
