new to PC&need advice.

Im totally new to PC gaming.in fact I just build my 1st PC last night.
But one thing Im confused on and I need help with is
I havent bought my monitor yet. (using a 1440x900 right now)
And Im absolutely pulling my hair out by 2 choices,either 144hz or 1440p?

can someone with experience with both of these types of monitors
please give me some input?

specs:
i5-3570k
Asus Strix 970

Budget:
up to $400usd
