Upgrading my rig when I can afford it, which may not be for a few months. I plan on getting either a 980 or a 970 and then going SLI later when I get a 4k monitor. After looking at the benchmarks I'm confused, why would you buy a 980 when it costs so much more for so little gain? I generally like to splurge for the little extra, but it seems a bit ridiculous in this case, am I missing something?

If you are going to play on 4k then you may want to look at getting 2 R9 295x2 and CrossFire them. In order to get around 60 fps on a 4k ultra settings would 4 980s. this all costs around 1500-1700 in GPUs not to mention the PSU you will have to upgrade. Long story short go with a 980 for now and save for some 295x2's in the future.

980 is capable of going Quad SLI, 970 is only capable of Tri-SLI (it's deliberately done that way).

But as Helldog says, 295x is better than 980's for 4k resolutions, and a 295x is only about $100 more than a single 980 (so I would recommend that you save up a bit more and get the 295x now while on sale).

Of course you might lose out on tech stuff like DSR, MFAA, or maybe dx12 support etc from nVidia, but for raw performance, 295x is really your best option.
