Picking solutions in thread i haven't created

Currently, in some threads i'm not the author of, i am able to selection the best solutions. Is this an intended mechanic?

This is an intended mechanic, but there are some rules.

1. You may only choose a BA in a thread other than your own if the thread has long been abandoned. A good litmus test is 2 weeks of no activity from the OP.

2. Do not ever unselect a BA that was awarded by the OP. If you feel that the BA was undeserved, or the answer contains incorrect or malicious information, report the post so that us moderators can take a look at it.

3. Do not get into BA fights with other users.

4. Do not award BAs to yourself using other accounts.

5. Do not select a BA in an abandoned thread simply because the poster seems to have a similar opinion to your own. Use some objectivity.

Then it's a bit bloody stupid that others have this option! You can't have unwritten forum rules and then expect people to abide by them. Perhaps the software should ensure that only those entitled to select a "Best Answer" are able to do so.
