Am I ready for 4k?

At the moment I have a single GTX780ti (Zotac edition) running a 1080p and two 900p monitors.

I do a lot of video editing and graphics related stuff as well as gaming.

Do people recommend me upgrading to a 4k monitor (The one i was thinking of which is pretty cheap is the Acer-CB280HK in the UK its around £350.)

I know a single GTX 780ti will not get brilliant performance at 4k in most high end games. However would it be good to get a 4k monitor just for the extra real-estate as well as some games and then if I wanted to play more graphics intensive games I could change the resolution to 2560x1440 on the system.

What do you guys recommend? Am I ready for 4k?

Solution
2560x1440 is your best bet for the 780ti, but even then if your playing games like BF4 you wont be able to max everything and maintain 60 fps at that resolution. A single 780ti is great for over 60fps gaming at 1920x1080. 2 780ti's is what will be expected to maintain 60 fps in any game at 2560x1440 (except Crysis 3 maxed with AA).

2 980's currently is what's needed to comfortably game at 4k at over 60 fps, and even then its difficult and some games cannot be maxed. 2-3 years and 4k will be viable cost wise, and performance wise.

This is the monitor I use. 2560x1440, 32 inches, great display, and vesa mount:

Gaming? You definitely cannot expect 60fps or even 30fps until to lower the settings minimum. On max settings, with latest games you will be below 30. Have a look at these.... they are in SLI 780ti :

Video editing and graphics? No problem.

I suggest if you really want a new monitor go for a 2560x1440 rather than full 4K. But, having said that, I still feel 1080p is the sweet spot right now.

Have a look at these benchmarks

Thanks for your reply.

So you think to get a 1440p monitor instead of this cheap 4k and running 1440p when needed (most games.)
Do you know of any 1440p monitors which would be better around the same price point?

nobody is ready for 4K yet
the GPU technology available is not ready for 4K
you can just manage to run games on 4k
running games at 30-40 fps at medium or low settings is not satisfactory
just stick with a 1440p at the most

Thanks for your reply. I think the main reason I would go to 4k is for the real estate. Most games would be running in 1440p anyway (which is still a good jump from 1080p I guess.)

I guess I should have a look around for a decent 1440p monitor which would be more suitable for gaming but I would be looking around the same price point (£350) which I couldn't find any which jumped out.

Thank you; that is really helpful! I think I will keep looking. Ideally I would like to step up from 1080p but keep decent gaming performance as well.

If you plan to upgrade further, consider a 2nd used 780ti on ebay from a reputable tech seller. You can get one now for around 300-350 used if you are lucky. Nice cheap way to get an amazing upgrade/performance increase for a good price!
