I am getting a new pc i7 4970k 8gb ram GTX 980 4gb super locked asrock Z97 extreme motherboard etc I am just wondering is this pc able to run a triple monitor setup for gaming.

Solution
3 x 1080p should be okay. If you get monitors with a higher resolution than that, (2k, 4k, etc) then you'll have to either turn down the graphics or get another 980 and put it in SLI.

Disagree. Games will start benefiting from more threads in no time. Some already do. But yea, for "NOW" I'd say your statement is correct and investing on, let's say, 2x 970 would be wiser.

no, sli or crossire is never ever ever wiser..

single powerful card is always wiser

i agree abt the cpu multithread part.. especialy with the AMD Mantle and Directx12
they both spread the cpu load to all the cores

Yes it will be able to run a multi monitor setup.

With the 980 one of the largest upgrades over the previous cards is the memory and that should directly help with higher resolutions. I would bet you wont drop below 30 fps on any games at ultra.

Ofc you could go for SLI but I think you should be more than fine with just the one.

If you plan on going triple with anything higher than 1080p monitors I suggest you start thinking about quad SLI setups. :p

I'm curious as to what games run significantly better on i7s than i5s

BF4 - I've never seen anyone reporting a significant fps gain with an i7 over an FX 83xx or i5. An i7 930 can be beaten by any Haswell i5 in gaming performance

ACU - Runs like garbage on all hardware

Watch Dogs - Read ACU

Star Citizen - Isn't out yet

All of the games that recommend an i7 for ultra and FX 8350 for ultra can be ran exactly the same on ultra by an i5 which beats a stock 8350 in gaming performance

You may run into some problems by going with SLI, but at some times you have not really much of a choice (like deciding to game on 4k right now and have decent FPS in most games). By previous experiences, I'd much rather run into those problems once in a while than get stuck on low fps. Just personal preferences.

true true..

4K IS OVERRATED THOUGH

Also, If you do go with i7 vs i5 you gain a lot of improvement outside of playing games. For example if you do some light video editing then the i7 will be far better than the i5 and really not that much more expensive.
