Hi,

Are 27" monitors only worth buying if they are 4k res (2560x1440)? Is 27" too big for the traditional 1920x1080p resolution which tends to cause jagged edges etc.

Cheers

2560x1440 is not 4K. That is what is referred to as 1440p. 4K refers to have a horizontal resolution of at least 4,000 pixels.

EDIT: And to answer your question, I guess it's just a matter of personal preference. The higher the resolution, the smaller text and things will appear on screen. Some people don't like squinting and might prefer a 27" @ 1920x1080. Myself? A 27" would have to be at least 2560 x 1440, as I like the clarity better than the larger text, etc....

1. 4k =/= 2560x1440, 4k = 3840 x 2160; in case you have it confused

2. My last monitor was ViewSonic VX2770-SMH, my personal opinion is that, while 1080p at 27" doens't look bad, it was on the threshold of me being able to notice the individual pixels (hence 28" 1080p was a no-go for me), hence I opted to either go for a 24" 1080p or 27" 1440p. I went for the latter, and I like it for the PPI, lack of pixel lines and I could put more things on my desktop.

My personal opinion though. Some find even 23" 1080p to be pixelated, I am used to 24" 1080p.

23-24" is the 'sweet spot' for 1080p. I would suggest going into a store and looking at a 27" 1080p monitor with your own eyes. Me personally, i dont mind the 27" 1080p but some find it pixellated, as mentioned above.

Just browsing the internet or using some programs on my current 27" monitor is completely fine, sure you can see some jagged lines and pixelation here and there but when I play wow half of the stuff on screen is hardly readable. Makes me think is it worth spending a bit of extra money and going for 2560x1440 res monitor

Also, not all games come with scalable or scaled UI (if WoW doesn't natively allow scaling, addons should have them). If UI and text legibility if your main concern, there probably isn't a great need to jump to 1440p, and certainly not 4k, which just makes the problem worse, on top of performance hit you will suffer.

1080p is a plenty high res. most of the time jagged edges that you speak of can be solved by turning on the ati aliasing feature in your game. secondly alot of pro gamers like to sit at the 21 to 24 inch range as they complain at higher sizes of the ability to focus on the entire monitor. when playing games your eyes tend to focus on certain parts of the monitor and the bigger you get the harder it will be to focus on the entire situation.

All that said i would go for a 23-24 inch 1080p monitor and try to shoot for the 120hz range
