Latop or Tablet for Mechanical Engineering Major

Hey everybody,

I am going to college next year, most likely majoring in Mechanical Engineering, and I have been battling myself about whether to get a tablet or a laptop for mobile computing. I have an extremely strong desktop that I will bring to keep in my dorm for the majority of my hard computing. I am looking for something that I can take to classes/libraries/coffee shops to get work done in class and with friends. What would be better for a mechanical engineering student, a tablet or a laptop? It would also be helpful if you could give a few suggestions for whichever side you chose.

A laptop will be far more useful for a college student. There are plenty of less expensive options. that still will have adequate power, and good battery life.

IMO, taking notes on a tablet is just painful.

Thanks for your response! I have a budget of around $1,000-2,000, so I'm looking for something a little more powerful than that computer. Preferably it will run engineering programs like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc. with ease. Thanks!

Something like this should be able to run whatever you want. For AutoCAD, I would suggest a Core i7 processor, and 16 GB of RAM.
