Hello,

I am picking my parts for a new IB build and know that the IB's run very hot, what CPU Cooler do you guys recommend for 4.2-4.5Ghz overclock for £50 ($78.44).

Thanks!

I looked into the Hyper 212 EVO, not dear at all...

Will it suffice for a 4.5Ghz overclock?

What kind of temperatures could i expect @ 4.5Ghz?

IB's run hot, but that doesn't mean anything. They can handle the heat. For temperatures, see this:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5763/undervolting-and-overclocking-on-ivy-bridge

That was done with an Intel Liquid Cooler, about roughly equivalent of a Corsair H60. The Hyper 212 EVO will be close to this, but a few degrees higher. The other thermalright heatsink will be below this, by a few degrees.

No problem. Make sure there is enough room in your case for that cooler (always check for tower coolers) for the height of the cooler.

Case Dimensions: 475x200x440 mm (LxWxH)

I should be alright XD.

You seem to know your hardware, would you mind taking a look at my parts and giving me suggestions/improvements on any of it (Budget is £700).

Case: Sharkoon T28 Mid Tower ATX Case - Blue (£49.98)
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Motherboard (£99.97)
Processor: I5-3570K (£176.85)

HDD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda (£62.13)
CPU Cooler: Thermalright HR-02 MACHO (£40)
Power Supply: OCZ ZS Series 750W 80+ Bronze PSU (£62.99)

A lot of this is subjective, and mostly personal tastes, but I'll see what I can say:

Case: It looks like a good case, but one bad review here:

http://www.hardocp.com/news/2012/07/30/sharkoon_t28_midtower_case/

So, if you want to replace that case, I'd go with an Antec 302. Like this :

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/antec-three-hundred-two-black-mid-tower-performance-gaming-case-w-o-psu

It has 170mm of clearance for a CPU cooler, and the Macho should fit.

Motherboard: Seems fine to me. It is recommended from Guru3d.com.

Processor: This is a good processor for games, work, whatever. If you plan on doing a LOT of encodings or other softwares that can make use of more than 4 threads, you might benefit from a 3770K, but this is enough.

Graphics: That's a good card, for that much money. If you plan on getting Nvidia, a 560 Ti is in the same price range, but I'd take a 6950 with 2GB of Vram over the 560 Ti.

HDD: not much to say here. I'd go for a WD Black, but that costs a little bit more than the seagate. Although you get a 5 year warranty with the WD Black.

Cooler: we settled this already.

Power Supply: That's a good choice, if I remember correctly, it is built by Sirfa, and at least one of those models were recommended by Johnny Guru. However, I'd go with a Corsair (to get the 5 year warranty) Enthusiast series, like this:

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-corsair-enthusiast-series-650txv2uk-85-eff-80-plus-bronze-sli-crossfire-eps-12v-quiet-fan-atx-v

This is still more power than you'll need with your computer.

Memory: I think that set requires 1.65V instead of the normal 1.5V. That's right at the limits Intel said the memory controller on the Bridge series of CPU is capable of. Here is a set that's cheaper and doesn't require so much voltage:

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-%282x4gb%29-corsair-ddr3-vengeance-jet-black-lp-pc3-12800-%281600%29-non-ecc-cas-9-9-9-24-xmp-15v

Again, a lot of those choices are subjective. The RAM and CASE seems a little more objective in the choices.

Thanks a bunch,

I took your advice and went for the CASE + RAM change.

Total cost is now £691

Do you think this is a good price?

Items were purchased from Amazon & Ebuyer (Comparing and finding best price)

I think the price is pretty good, especially in the UK. Is Scan usually more expensive than Amazon and Ebuyer ?

Scan UK are better on price on some parts by £1 or so but so are ebuyer / amazon on some items...

Allot of the parts are not in stock on SCAN UK, that's why I will probably be sticking with ebuyer / amazon, the price difference will probably be nothing.

Thank you for helping me, ill get this ordered on monday. :]!

One last question, Is the TIM applied on the Thermalright good quality?

I have some AKASA 455 tim sitting around, what do you think?

I think thermalright comes with a little syringe of TIM. According to this:

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/printpage/Thermal-Compound-Roundup-October-2011/1396

The AKASA 455 is similar to the Thermalright in performance, within 1 degree (errors on that test were half a degree, I think).

Either or, I suppose.

Yep, according to that review, on-par with Arctic Silver 5, which I'd say is really good. AS5 was the king before all this newer generation of TIMs came out. There are some exotic stuff out there now for TIM. These two pastes, the Akasa and THermalright are within 2-3 degrees of the AS5.
