If I buy a 4k monitor and run it at 1440p in games will i notice any degradation of image quality due to downscaling vs running 1440p on a native 2560x1440 display?

Reason being I'm building a rig and have the horsepower to run 1440p but not 4k currently. I plan on getting a 2nd gtx980 for SLI eventually and would like the monitor to support 4k gaming.

Solution
No you will not have scaling, the monitor will adjust to the rsolution you set for it, 1080p or 1440p or whatever resolution you choose. You can even run windows in 4k and set the gaming resolution differently.

no i have two 970s and they run most games at 4k ultra settings however the newest games like dying light i have to choose between 4k low settings or 1440 at ultra settings. i switch back and forth all the time. no degredation. However two 980s should be able to rock 4k no problem for about the next year i am presuming. at only about 40-50 fps at ultra. I returned many monitors before settling on the samsung UHD 39" for only about $450. great deal..
