Dual Display resolution problem

I just bought the samsung S24D390 which is a 24" 1920x1080p monitor. I am using a dvi port to plug it in my GTX970 G1 and I am using a VGA port from my old samsung monitor into the intel motherboard graphics (because I currently have no hdmi port to plug it in my videocard too)

My problem is since my main monitor (S24D390) is 1080p, why can't i select a 1080p resolution as my resolution in the settings of my games and even in the desktop itself?

Do I need HDMI to do this? Do I need my Main and sub monitor to be both plugged in the VC to do this or do I need to do something else? Please help me.

When you unplug the VGA cable from the motherboard, can you select the 1080p resolution for the new screen?

Do you have the latest drivers for the video card installed?

DVI even at it's lowest spec if the cable was old should be able to push 1080p, so it's not the cable.

Just trying to eliminate potential causes.
