D-Link NAS speed super-slow

Hi. My NAS drive transfer speeds are super-slow: about 1.8MB/s max. My setup is:

NAS:
D-Link DNS-320 (2 drives mirrored via RAID) Full specs: http://sharecenter.dlink.com/products/DNS-320
800 MHz cpu // 128MB RAM // 1 x 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet

Modem/Router:
AT&T U-Verse 3801hgv Full specs [PDF]: http://www.2wire.com/pages/pdfs/3801.pdf
-- Ethernet WAN; VDSL2; 4 Ethernet LAN Ports
-- 802.11b/g Wireless
-- Ethernet 10/100 with auto-crossover (4-port RJ-45)

Wireless adapter:
I have multiple devices, including the older 10/100 and the newer 10/100/1000 Ethernet

Does anyone know why transfers might be so slow? I'm thinking it's the D-Link or the Modem/Router, as it's the same speed (1.8MB/s) on a brand new laptop.

Help much appreciated,
Tom

Thx for responses. My friend has to get a gigabit switch and the same D-Link, and he gets about the same speed (maybe 3MB/s). I do have the D-Link wired in.

Does the hardware specs (processor speed, RAM, etc) make a big difference in the transfer speeds? For example, if I got a Synology, with high-end specs, would my transfer speeds increase?

Yes, and yes.

Cheap NAS drives usually have weak hardware, which limits read/write speed before network connectivity comes into play. Switching to a gigabit router will help, but even with a 100Mbps router you should be seeing transfer speed of around 12MBps.

That was my thought -- I just can't for the life of me figure out why it's not at 12MBps. My friend - an advanced computer programmer - also has the same D-Link, but with a new gigabit router, new Lenovo laptops, etc and is at about 3MBps tops. I want to say it's the D-Link but people apparently get speeds even 30MBps: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2Q5MQTGDDGMZG/ref=cm_srch_res_rtr_alt_1

I'm perplexed.

I haven't but I will get ahold of a cat6 and try soon (my friend has same slow speeds with cat5e).
