Black border around second monitor display

I just connected up my second monitor. My monitors are both exactly the same make and model (DELL S2240L). My graphics card only has one HDMI slot and one DVI-I slot and the monitors have one HDMI slot and a VGA port. One monitor is connected HDMI to HDMI and works fine. The other is HDMI to DVI through an adaptor. Despite playing with different resolutions there is a border approx 1" on the left/right borders and 1/2" on the top and bottom borders. I would like to see both monitors in full screen filling the 21.5" display. How can I make this work?

Go to the GPU driver control panel, select the 2nd monitor, then set the right resolutions like 1920x1080. Saving and done.

Do you have an AMD graphics card? If so you probably just have to adjust the overscan:
