After a week of reviewing stuff (and college work) finally ordering parts this weekend for my first build! Here are all the parts
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/hZhLYJ

Only things I'm really looking at are 4690 vs. 4690k and h97 vs. z97 (Just if I ever want to OC...I doubt I'll really need it). Just a desktop for work and gaming.
Also looking at the 2gb VRAM for the 960x, is that future-proof enough? The 970 looks good, but I'd just be playing on one 1080p monitor so I'm not sure if paying $120+ extra will get me my moneys-worth.

Other than that, just gotta look around for build guides and try not to screw up my first build! All advice on anything build related is appreciated, thanks for looking!

The 4690K is only $5 more than the 4690; you would need to spend about $40 more to get a good motherboard though. Not worth it if you will never overclock.

The 960 is a joke. Unless it can be had for less than $175, it's not worth the money. A 280/X at least would offer better performance for about the same price.

2GB is not futureproof at 1080p; you want at least 3GB today, but the more you can get the better.

Well considering that it beats out the 760 pretty handily for less money, I wouldn't call it a joke.... but I can see your point. My next alternative is the 970 at 4GB, looking through side-by-side benchmarks between the two and while the 970 dominates it, still very playable FPS on modern games on the 960. Very disappointing that there aren't any 3GB+ versions of the 960 though.

The card is a joke for the price it's selling at; nothing other than NVIDIA greed at this point. The 280X beats it, comes with 3GB of VRAM and can be had for close to the same price (or less, in some cases).

The 970 is a substantial leap forward over the 960. IMO it's a good card for 1080p; maybe slightly overkill at this moment but it's performance will be put to good use with (near) future games.

Well just due to compatibility reasons I'd probably be sticking to NVIDIA. And the 970 seems to be having memory issues at 3GB+ currently...but I'm sure I wouldnt' be hitting those kind of VRAM usages any time soon.

Compatibility issues?

The 970 is fine until you hit 3.25GB VRAM, then bandwidth drops like a rock and performance suffers. It's looking like a hardware issue caused by how they gimped the performance, but we'll see where it goes.
