Hello all,
This will be a long post I'm afraid as I have a bit of a dilemma.

So I HAD a MSI 970A-G46 motherboard with a AMD FX-8120 BE attached and a nice CM Hyper 212 EVO cooler to complement it. AMD 7870 2GB 1GHz Edition and I have a NOT SO GREAT Advance 750 Watt power supply and windows 7.

About a week ago I was frustrated with sudden frame rate drops and my PC SHUTTING OFF if getting too hot during game (to solve this I had to put my GPU power to -20% in AMD Overdrive) so I decided to research what could be done,
But I also noticed my CPU's were being parked in the resource manager and that I hadn't installed the hotfixes to stop this. Downloaded the hotfixes, attempted to install and I got an error saying something like not needed for this system but that's not really important.

So I went on to update my bios as I was reading in some forums something like needed to update the bios for the system to see that the hotfixes were indeed for me.
Me being me I didn't take into account it said ONLY UPDATE IF USING WINDOWS 8. Once again me thinking "how can that affect a bios update" I was so wrong & stupid.

Downloaded bios files, run, loading bar,PC SHUTS OFF!

So I panic and try to turn on pc (phase 4 lights all on) no display from GPU, try to reset CMOS Battery and Jumpers,NOTHING.

I now know my board is dead, leaving me to pick up a new motherboard for my 8120,new SSD so I can have a nice fresh windows 8.1 install and I am now thinking about my PSU,is it the cause of my Catastrophe or was it because I didn't listen.

Guys I am coming to you for advice on a few things

First a nice, cool running motherboard for my FX-8120 (I know its bad but I don't have much money to change and will be OC'ing with new board) ALSO 970 chipset or 990x or 990fx, some I was looking at:

Which 240gb SSD out of these is best:

And what Power Supplies I should look at to prevent further problems, some I have been looking at again:

So sorry about the long links and post but I am so grateful for any help/advice about this.

Thank you both for your quick replies,
As for the BIOS i can't get access to it at all, none of my monitors getting a display from the graphics card.

I can also use a site called Pixmania.ie but only this and dabs.ie as I live in ireland and need these parts ASAP to get my pc back up and running.

Thank you blackbird for your suggestions,I assume the 990 chipset will be no benefit to me?

And the 550w PSU will be enough to power all my components and support a bit of overclocking?

Thank you so much again guys really. :)

do you have an other pc for backup? old one but working?
did you try to remove the cmos battery and reinstall it 30 secondes later?
did you put the cmos jumper to reset the bios?
can you try an other gpu card from a friend or???
can you grab a psu from a friend or ???

Thank you badboyrog for your support,

Unfortunately yes the CMOS battery and jumper reset didn't work,

I Can try another card from a friend but I dont have access to another PSU :(
They're all console peasants :p

I will update back when I try this other Graphics card.

And Black Bird - I was thinking that Asus 990fx chip would be best, just checked with the power supply calculator the 550w Antec will be fine for my computer. Altogether comsuming only 515Watts.

Thank you all so much again

Just a quick update and somebody can close this thread :)

I went with the ASUS M5A99FX Motherboard,
Kingston HyperX 240GB SSD (i know this wasnt on the original list)
And a XFX XXX PRO 650W Semi Modular PSU that was a pleasure to work with!

PC has been rebuilt and is now working flawlessly, GPU did not get harmed by the BIOS update as suggested thank god :)

Thank you all so much once more.
