I live in the UK, my computer is a hp pavilion p6-2071uk, link below.

i would like to be able to put settings on high atleast for games such as shadow of mordor and upcoming releases.

i use a 32 inch monitor, at resolution of 1920x1080

i was considering a SAPPHIRE AMD R9 280 Graphics Card (3GB, DDR5) at £142
http://www.amazon.co.uk/SAPPHIRE-AMD-Graphics-Card-DDR5/dp/B00IRTXPBM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1423064436&sr=8-1&keywords=r9+280

The r9 280 will be good for the shadow of mordor for now. and your cpu ( either A6 or A8) is little bit weak. Here is the review http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/shadow-of-mordor-performance,3996-5.html
But you need consider 1) Will the GPU fit into the case? you need open the case to make the measurement, like http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/upload/product/2810/feature8.jpg to see the space is big enough for the r9 280 ( Dimensions= 26.2 x 11.2 x 3.4 cm). You can get the dimensions from the manufacturer website. 2) Because the HP pc has 300w psu only, it can't power the r9 280, you need other PSU, and buy the good brand PSU for the high end GPU.

Here is some info:
PSU tier list http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1804779/power-supply-unit-tier-list.html
PSU requirements for the GPU http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page362.htm
I recommend to buy the xfx 550W ( XFX P1-550S-XXB9 ) http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1550sxxb9

The R9 280 is a great card! It may be bottlenecked by your CPU just a bit so I would upgrade to an FX-8320.

For my current computer, do you think it is worth upgrading the GPU to something which my power supply can handle or would you recommend i just save money for a new computer?

It will only "bottleneck" (hate that word) aka be limited a little bit on very CPU intensive games.

Why do you hate that word? It has been around for years haha.

i have ordered the r9 280 and i plan to order a xfx 550W later today but i wanted to ask if i were to buy a CPU for between 50 to 100 pounds which one would you recommend?
would a AMD Six Core FX-6300 be good as i have found one for 40 pounds?

If you get the fx6300 for your hp pavilion p6-2071uk, then don't do it, because the pc has the FM1 socket, which does not support the AM3+ fx6300.

Oh yeah! :p I didn't even notice that. My comment still kinda stands though, that FX-6300 is suspiciously cheap if it's being sold as "new".
Damn, FM1. Old school
