Need help deciding which path to take. CPU or GPU?

Hi all, and thanks in advance.


I am looking to upgrade my rig, but only have so much cash at the moment. My main question is which would net me the most gains in gaming?

I currently have an FX-8320 and an R9-270x. I am looking at upgrading my board and CPU to a I5-4690k, or upgrading the GPU to an R9-290. I can't do both at once, but will later on upgrade both.


So which will give me the most gains for my dollar? Going from an 8320 (@ 4Ghz) to a 4690k? Or from a 270x to a 290?

If it's primarily a gaming rig I would upgrade the GPU to either a 290/290x/GTX 970. The 8320 is powerful enough for now especially when overclocked. I didn't see a huge improvement from my 8350 to 4690k (there is improvement) but you'll see more from a stronger GPU in terms of gaming.

The 290 is plenty powerful enough and if you can find a good deal on one I wouldnt hesitate to grab it. Let me know if you have any other questions

honestly, since you have the budget to upgrade both things, but at later dates, get the i5 with mobo. If you play games like Amra and/or bf, the i5 will benefit you,

If he wants better FPS he'll see a bigger improvement from a 270->290/970 over the 8320->i5
