Best (2K) resolution for gaming monitor

I plan to get a 2K resolution monitor for gaming purposes in the next months, once the new R9 series is out (if everything goes as expected), but im quite confused by the differences in the resolutions of most monitors and not sure if its really worth the price. What is the best 2560x monitor for gaming? x1080, x1440 or x1600? Is there a big visual/detail difference any of them and a generic 1920x1080 monitor that I already own?

The three resolutions have different aspect ratios. 2560x1080p is 21:9 and is an ultra wide monitor. The x1440 is probably the most common type with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The x1600 is 16:10. A good quality 2560x1440p monitor would be a good upgrade. The sharpness is a slight difference over 1080p but the real benefit to me was a larger screen.
