Single gtx980 or R9 290 xfire

Guys,
My 7970 ghz has served me well and it's beginning to show it's age. I was seriously looking at the GTX 970 as I didn't really want to spend £400 + on a new card. I then noticed that I could get an R9 290 Xfire setup for slightly less than a GTX980. I currently game at 1080p but do sometimes use multiple monitors for reading guides while playing etc. I think I might get a 1440p monitor in around 12months. Should I buy R9 290 Xfire or GTX 980? I just can't decide.

a pair of 290's would easily compete against a single 980, but with that said, one faster card is better than two slower cards, i would recommend a single 980
